Naked light 5.2 is out—again pushing ahead with selections. There’s two big changes this time around.

Selection node Re-ordering

Nodes in the selection row can be freely re-ordered by dragging-and-dropping, including both filter nodes and generator nodes.

Currently, undo is not supported for rearranging nodes within the selection, and doing so will corrupt the history.

Functionally Complete Selection Logic

The selection combination logic is now functionally complete.

Previous versions of Naked light had two modes for combining multiple selections: add (disjunction) and subtract (material nonimplication.)

5.2 adds intersection (conjunction) and exclusion (xor.) With these primitives, re-ordering, and inversion, it’s possible to create the results of all logical connectives.

Since Naked light operates on 32-bit rather than binary masks, it uses slightly modified formulas to achieve sensible results.

Like older versions of Naked light (and Photoshop), adding to selections or subtracting from them works by holding down shift or option as you make a selection. To change selection combination operations, you right-click (or control-click) the operation disc between the nodes.

Get It

Naked light Preview 5.2 works only on Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.5 and higher.

Still following that development with interest. I have just downloaded the last version and I had to force it quit : it doesn’t quit normally.

does naked light have alpha channels/alpha creation/support? I am a visual effects artist, I use houdini and softimage and am very interested in purchasing a mac. I am a adobe license holder but am interested in the newer developed imaging tools. But the main function that I absolutely have to have is alpha channel support for my 3d/effects development. Your application looks awesome, better than pixelmator (who did not return my correspondence) and if you do have alpha channel support I would love to look into your product more. Also what filters are available? Let me know guys, love the node workflow by the way. Keep up the great work!

    John—

Right now, Naked light has very basic, preliminary support for masks for manipulating alpha channels.

This is actually the area that I’m currently working on, so more on this should be up in the next few weeks.

On a side note, if there’s any specific features you need, send me a note and hopefully I can accomodate. A full, finalized filter list isn’t going to be available for a bit because that’s dependent on the engine, which is going to get a major overhaul soon.

    Hi Naked folks

What a great looking application… came here looking for info on NakedLight for the iPhone and have been blown away with the whole concept of Naked Light… most impressive indeed!!!

The pricing… how long is it to be available at the special pre-release price? and what is the pricing schedule when there are future upgrades? I assume that upgrades will not be free ;-)

And if one can purchase at the pre-release price how come the version is at 5.2?

cheers from Oz… and keep up the great work… always so good to see products go up against the bemoths like PS Trevor

thanx brandon for the reply. As far as options go, direct support for the existing photoshop filters would be great. If you want my wish list I can give it to you, but keep in mind that it would be biased towards an fx artist level and not necessarily towards photo professionals or illustrators.

Painting tools (clone, brush, burn, dodge, smudge, blur, and pencil/charcoal), and brushes custom brush design capabilities HDRI/Open EXR/Cineon support and no color space limitations Photoshop comparable alpha support RGBA read and write (create/fill/paint, etc…) Polygon Lasso and Magic wand selection tool

thats all I would need. Keep in mind …. it is a wish list. hee hee

looks great! keep up the good work, I will be frequenting the site.

Hmmm it’s getting nicer and nicer. :) Nice work, Brandon! Pre-purchased it. Do I get a certain license code or something like that now? Or do I get it with the final release?

Some ideas for the future. An open plugin support would be great, like supporting external Quartz or CoreImage Filters. Photoshop filter/plugin - support, like john wished already, would be nice too. :)

By the way, are you looking for translators? I could help you translating it into German. ;)

    Grtx, Markus

    Oh, I forgot:

I’m a Lightroom user, so it would be great if NakedLight would also have native support for the lightroom database like it’s given for Aperture already. I hope that this would be possible.

I just found out about Naked light and it sounds like exactly the kind of app I’m looking for, node based anything makes me really happy and this has me really excited. I’d throw don’t the pre-purchase price right now if I could run it—and it’s as good as it looks—but it says it isn’t for me:

“”You can’t open the application “Naked light.app” because it is not supported on this architecture.”

Lame, okay, what’s wrong, Leopard? Check, Intel? Check, ATI GPU? Check. Um, what is breaking it?

Here’s my specs: Macbook Pro OS: Mac OS X 10.5.6 CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz RAM: 3 GB

    Is this still in development?

    Hello Brandon,

I’ve been taking a look at Naked Light, it looks promising! Any news about the development and the release date?. Also would be nice to see a video demo about the software, is possible you upload one?.

    Have a nice day,

    josé

I’m deeply interested in the philosophies behind Naked Light (the Mac app): non-destructive editing, resolution agnosticism, editable nodes, reasonable price). I’m considering pre-purchasing Naked Light.

However, there’s been no updates on the blog, and the current beta is not close to a finished version. I’m eager to hear that development is continuing, even if release is some time off (please take your time and make a polished product).

If possible, please email me (I can’t find an email on the Naked website anywhere), and update me on product plans and timeframe. I’m also happy to help in whatever ways I can (planning, UI design, web design and execution, marketing).

    Thank you for the promising work thus far, {ryan}

  13. Alex Says:

Hey guys, haven’t given up, have you?

I agree with John, some painting tools would be nice, but we can wait ’til 2.0. Btw, Naked Light keeps crashing on me when I try adjusting the Levels …

  14. ZapPow Says:

I came here because I have just seen an article about Naked Light in a french magazine (june 2009 issue of “Vous et votre Mac”). But Naked Light, in fact, seems to be dead : eight months without update !

  15. ML Says:

I too saw a link to your site in an article about alternatives to photoshop but found the site to be older than 8 months and wondered if anything was still happening. I will keep checking. An update would be comforting.

  16. Ke Says:

Is there any where you can download a demo / trial?

I could not locate anything throughout the site except for pre-purchase.

    Thanks.

  17. Ke Says:
    • Scratch that, found the link above (should be different colour perhaps for those that scan).
  18. chris baumbach Says:

Please, please, please tell me this project is still alive.

  19. Robert Ramin Says:

Doesn’t work anymore with Snow Leopard (requires 10.5.5) !

Yes, 8 months without update, maybe you should have asked more for pre-order ?
