A bunch more filters are up; this time all filters that aren’t in Core Image.
Noise Reduction
Always useful. This is a port of the Noise Reduction filter in Naked touch.
Noise reduction compares each pixel to those surrounding it. If it doesn’t differ significantly, it’s blended into it’s surroundings.
Noise
Since Naked light is resolution independent, you get Perlin noise: you control the scale and you get the same noise for every resolution.
There’s two temporary issues that are currently contingent on other issues. One, the noise repeats. This will get cleaned up when I move into performance issues. Two, the controls are rather awkward. Again, this’ll get cleaned up when I clean up all the inspector-related awkwardness (you know, sliders that show up in random order, sliders where there should be checkboxes, that sort of ugliness).
Layered Noise
You’ve probably seen this effect in Photoshop’s Clouds filter. This is several layers of Perlin noise added together, each layer at twice the frequency and a fraction of the intensity of the previous layer.
Three differences between Naked light’s Layered Noise and Photoshop’s Clouds:
- It’s resolution independent.
- It’s full color, rather than a linear blend between two colors.
- You can control the “persistence” of each layer.
Channel Blur
Just a fun filter. This lets you blur some channels, but not others, creating strange color halos.
Get it
Warning: Naked light doesn’t currently work on Mac OS X 10.5.5, and the changes required to get it up and running aren’t insignificant (I have to replace an entire third-party library). The current binary only works on 10.5.3 and 10.5.4. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Will this work on Tiger. I do NOT have leopard. Also this software similar to “Live Picture”. I used to use Live Picture years ago.

One of the more interesting filters to me from lightroom is the “vibrance” filter, which is said to be like a saturation filter that doesn’t screw up skin tones.
Also, I just tried 4.2.1 after not trying a version since I don’t know when. On first launch I got the splash screen then nothing. After a while I checked Activity Monitor to find NL eating CPU. After killing it I found that my system.log had grown to 120MB of messages like this one:

Deleting my old library solved the problem. You might want to put in some checks to make sure you don’t try to load incompatible libraries.

How close is the release of the final Naked Light 1.0?
When I bough the pre-purchase license earlier this year you said the 1.0 version should be released “in the end of the summer” (also stating that the summer ends 22nd September where you live). Seems to me you have less than a month to actually come up with a working, bug free 1.0 version. Is that even possible?
The 1st of October I will be claiming a refund.

You’re totally right, I have never developed any software. But, the thing is that I have payed in advance for the software and the developer (Brandon) have said he will ship the final 1.0 version “in the end of the summer”. If someone ask me to pay for a product with the promise to deliver at a specific time I expect them to actually deliver, don’t you? If I want to give money to chairity I’ll give them to the Red Cross, not to a software developer that can’t deliver the software. If Brandon don’t release the 1.0 version in a month or so he’s in the fraud business, not the software business.

Leif, just go with it. software developers are always having to change release dates due to issues beyond them and not even worth getting into right now. (another reason to keep the public clueless) it’s about delivering a quality product, not hitting a target deadline. I think its about time someone develops a node based image editing system, DUH!. its been around in VFX compositing for years. With that being said, I can wait the extra time, knowing full well that its being developed, and will be bug free upon release. dont think anyone else isnt as eager as you, and quit being a asshole.

Although I can understand you’re unhappy with the current situation, I feel the (possible) made not only be up to the developer. Naked Light depends for some part on the new technologies in Leopard, and possible Snow Leopard. It is a known fact the Apple of changes a lot of things, sometimes without even properly documenting this, or, that Apple doesn’t give full access to all it’s technologies. This is frustrating developers no end, and is often a reason why software is delayed. Not because the developer is late, but because Apple has changed the rules in the midst of the game.
An interesting example is DevonThink Pro, which I use. Version 2 was announced mid 2005. And you know what, it still isn’t here, partly due to all the sudden and unannounced changes in Leopard.
All this doesn’t change your situation, I hope it’ll change your mind regarding asking for a refund. Naked Light is trying to do something really new, which is always difficult. When some things are beyond your control, it makes it even harder.

I am an amateur photographer currently using aperture and photomatix for all my imaging needs. I would like to extend my toolset and if I can do it without photoshop, it would be great. From what I have read, node-based composites of naked light will let me do the typical mask/layer stuff. Is that correct ? Can I edit directly 14bit RAW files and export them again as raw (or 16-bit-tiff)? Is there anywhere a tutorial to help me get started ? What will be the price once final version released ? If this program suits the needs of a typical Aperture user wanting to get rid of photoshop (or not buying into photoshop like myself), then I really want naked light to succeed, I will pre-purchase it and encourage others to do as well, because software development as a small or even one-man shop is a very tough thing !

Sorry about Naked light not working in 10.5.5. 10.5.5 broke compatibility with a third-party library I use called iLifeControls. iLifeControls is no longer maintained, so I have to take it out and rewrite any code in it I was using.
Honestly, I’m not sure if I still use the library any more, but removing it is going to require a fair bit of testing to make sure nothing gets broken when I take it out. A 10.5.5 compatible version is going to take a bit of time.

How is the programming advancing… Have you got past the problems with iLifeControls or are there some new neat features coming up you haven’t yet told us? Is there a fixed beta still coming or is the next release going to be final? I’m sure there are lots of people who would like to hear a word from you, after all, it’s been a while since you last posted anything here. I’m really looking forward to the publishing of this software and am waiting for the “final release” to support you with the full price.
